ROSS PARK MALL SHOW & SEASON OPENER NOW LESS THAN 2 MONTHS AWAY AS MERCER RACEWAY PARK’S 2005 SEASON DRAWS CLOSER

Mercer, PA…With sunshine and melting snow and the month of February just a mere flip of the calendar away, Mercer Raceway Park continues to plan for the upcoming 2005 season. With that in mind comes “Thunder in the Park III†at the Ross Park Mall March 17-20 and the second annual “Chiller Thriller†on March 27.
Mercer Raceway Park is pleased to secure the Ross Park Mall for the third consecutive year for “Thunder in the Park III†– A Steel Valley Motorsports Gala. This four-day event will fill the concourses of the beautiful Ross Park Mall- Pittsburgh’s premier shopping center Thursday through Sunday, March 17-20.
“This show has been a sellout each of the first two years,†acknowledged owner Vicki Emig. “We’ve had some of western Pa. eastern Ohio’s finest racers on display in this great showplace. This show has been great for exposing auto racing to a lot of new people. We’re sure this year’s event will do the same.â€
Participants in last year’s event will have the right of first refusal. Already four new drivers have requested space. Any drivers or vendors wishing to take part in this great event are urged to e-mail webmaster@mercerracewaypark.com or contact the office at 724-964-9300. Setup is scheduled for approximately 10 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16 and teardown is at approximately 6:15 p.m. on the Sunday, March 20.
One week following “Thunder in the Park,†Mercer Raceway Park will swing open its gates for its 54th anniversary season opener on Saturday, March 26. “Chiller Thriller†will include the ULMS Late Models, 360 Sprint Cars, and Stock Cars (Little Guy Nationals rules). Pit gates will open at 3:30 p.m. with grandstand gates at 4:30 and racing beginning at 7 p.m.
Last year’s earliest season opener ever saw David Scott turn back a fine field of 39 Late Models to win the ULMS-sanctioned opener. Local Arnie Kent topped four Ohio standouts in a field of 25 cars to win his first ever 360 Sprint Car race at Mercer, while Andy Buckley got off to good start in his championship season with the Stock Car win.
On Saturday April 2, the point races will begin in the four weekly divisions as the Sprint Cars, Modifieds, Stock Cars, and Strictly Stocks will take to the track. More information on the above events will be released in the coming weeks.
Mercer Raceway Park is located minutes from both Interstate 79 and 80 just off Route 19 on Fairground Road in Mercer, Pa. Dirt track racing and quality family entertainment are presented weekly late March through early October.
