Lent

Posted By Paul on February 10, 2005

I come from a background and tradition that doesn’t observe Lent. From whence I came, only Catholics observed Lent, and in that culture, that meant it was something that ‘we’ didn’t do.

Now I realize that many in this post-Christian culture find real significance in the observance of Lent. I am genuinely curious about this tradition.

Do you observe Lent? Why? How? What is it all about?

School me, please.

  1. I also come from one of those non-Lent-observing traditions… but now in the church I pastor we’re starting to experiment with it, mostly by letting it influence our Sunday worship. We’re a church plant, so many of the people who attend are from backgrounds that *did* celebrate Lent (heavy Lutheran & Catholic populations here), so they’re celebrating it anyway.

This year we’re looking at various spiritual disciplines & how they can help us clear away the static to hear God more clearly. (Our message series is titled “Can You Hear Me Now?”) Last week was fasting, this week is silence, upcoming weeks will include prayer, Bible reading, community, etc.

    Anyway, that’s about it!
