Google Map – wish I could see what all the hoopla is about

Posted by Paul on 11th February 2005 in What I'm Thinking

Everyone is talking about Google Maps, how it is the best thing since sliced bread.

Can’t prove it by me. Here is what I see when I go there:

google map

I’ve even removed almost every extension I had installed, figuring maybe one of them was somehow blocking this great new asset to all mankind…..nada…..

Anyone else having this problem?

What browser is that you’re using? I remember reading somewhere (either Slashdot or the Google Maps FAQ) that it only works with IE or Mozilla/Firefox. Certain variants of IE (Slimbrowser was mentioned) break it, for some reason. And it doesn’t yet work on Safari (Mac).

I’m using Firefox & Google Maps works great! :)

    Hi Rich,

Thanks for the comment.! I’m using Firefox, which is what is frustrating me so much. I’ve seen others mention they were using Firefox, I just can’t figure out why I can’t get it to display on my machine. That’s why I went so far as to uninstall all my Firefox extensions – just in case it was one of them.

Oh well…maybe Google just hates me!

I am using firefox and I get the same screen you have.

Ah, I’m glad I’m not the only one then….I mean, I’m sorry you can’t get it either, but I was starting to think it was like something personal against me! Nobody else was seeing what I was seeing, I figured Google had just decided to hate me!

I’m using IE and it works fine. Basically, the grey screen is the beginning point and then it downloads lots of little image files to overlay the grey region. I just tried it out and was very impressed with it.

That’s pretty odd. I’m using FF 1.0 with tons of extensions, and I haven’t had any problems. Do you use a personal firewall that could be interfering? Some of those will muck about with HTTP headers and such. Though I’m EZ Firewall without any problems.

The only thing I’ve got that might be making it wonky in that regards would be SP2, and I’m starting to wonder if that is what is causing several of my mysterious little wonkiness issues that I haven’t been able to figure out.

I’m in the same boat. It works perfectly fine for me at home, but at work (with the same Firefox configuration) I get the same blank screen. It works fine at both locations with IE6 and XP SP2, so I doubt it’s a firewall issue.

    It’s a mystery…

I have found the fix for blank Google maps in Firefox (courtesy of Slashdot):

Check your JavaScript advanced options in the Preferences. You’ll need “Change Images” and “Disable Or Replace Context Menus” checked.

    Excellent! Thank you!
