Hokies top Terps to clinch bye

The Hokies beat the Terrapins 86-76 on Saturday to clinch a first-round bye in the ACC Tournament. Picked to finish 10th in the 11-team ACC in the league’s preseason media poll, the Hokies (15-12, 8-8) wound up tied for fourth place and will be seeded fourth or fifth.

The unbelievable Virginia Tech basketball season continues on. While not as impressive as their victory over Duke, this one was still sweet.

And next comes my favorite time of the basketball season – the ACC Tournament. This is the time of year that I actually start paying attention to basketball. It sure will be sweet to see the Hokies win at least once in the tournament.

The ACC, after the top 3, seems to be evenly matched this year. How do you explain a Ga. Tech team, returning most of their starters from a final 4 team last year, finishing at .500 in the conference? You have doormat Clemson coming on strong, as well as some talented teams in Miami and Fla. State, not to mention a certain band of Hokies picked to be near the bottom at the start of the year.

Hmmm, I just might have to take a half day vacation this week …
