Va Tech wins 1st round NIT game

Temple’s taller frontcourt players made it tough for Virginia Tech to score inside, but the Hokies sank eight 3-pointers to beat the Owls 60-50 in a first-round National Invitation Tournament game Tuesday at Cassell Coliseum. Carlos Dixon and Zabian Dowdell had three 3-pointers apiece, and freshman Wynton Witherspoon added two.

Sure it’s not as prestigious as it was in 1973 when Tech won the NIT, but for a program that hasn’t seen post-season action for the past 9 years, it’s still special.

  1. And no broken arms either! I wonder if that will be Chaney’s last game he coaches? He needs to enjoy retirement, preferably with some supervision. I wouldn’t mind seeing him replace Billy Packer - but then again, I’d rather hear a tree stump than Packer.

  2. I thought you might be interested to know that I picked Pittsburgh as one of my upset picks to win against Washington in our office NCAA bracket.

After I’d mentioned this to one of our managers, who is from Pittsburgh, he promptly told me he thought I needed to go take a drug test! LOL!

  3. [I tried leaving a comment yesterday but I got an error page instead, so I'll try again.]

It’s a shame that VaTech did not end the season stronger. At least they came out of the Temple game without any broken arms!

I have to wonder if that was the last game for Coach Chaney. He needs to retire, or at least replace Billy Packer. The worst part about the NCAA tourney is having to listen to Hacker.

  4. Hmmm, that’s weird. Now my first comment showed up, and I did not see it before making my second comment. Those pesky gremlins …

  5. I hope it is the last game for Chaney, his integrity is now non-exsistent. There is no excuse for what he did, under any circumstances.

BUT, I’m wondering if Temple will decide to let him break the 500-win plateau before ’suggesting’ he retire?
