Comedy Movie Madness — Pick Your Final 4 Comedy Movies

Posted By Paul on March 20, 2005

MSNBC.com has a bracket seeding deal called Comedy March Madness, where they have seeded what they call the top 64 comedies of all time. Then you can select your ‘winner‘ of each ‘match-up‘ and see who comes out as your champion.

Probably half the movies they have listed I had never heard of, so it was kind of pointless for me on more than a few picks, but I ended up with Ferris Bueller, Animal House, A Christmas Story, and Slapshot as my Final Four; with Animal House edging Slapshot for the Championship.

You can see all of my picks here.

A couple of movies that I was surprised to NOT find in their list were Back to School and It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. And no 3 Stooges movies? And what about Martin and Lewis movies? Abbott and Costello?

Oh well, who ends up in your Final Four?

  1. Yes, not all the best movies were there. (Where’s Planes, Trains & Automobiles?)

    But it sure was fun.

I notice that with my friends of different ages that we tended to pick from different eras. I picked movies from 70’s to mid ’80s. My younder friends from ’80s to ’90s.

    But, you, my dear sir…
    Martin and Lewis…Abbott and Costello…

    Hmmmmm…. How old ARE you?

  2. Comedy usually does not age well, unless it’s the slapstick of something like a 3 Stooges (if that’s your cup of tea, ya chowderhead!). We like movies more based on our experience when first seeing them, rather than seeing them now and making some type of objective evaluation.

About twenty years ago I saw “Porkies” at a sneak-preview screening, and laughed my head off with the rest of the packed audience. It’s a vulgar movie, but at the time it was funny. I agree that not including “Planes …” was a mistake - best Thanksgiving movie ever, and there are some great Christian themes in there, especially if you can find an edited version that cuts out most of the car rental counter scene.

I did not like how they bracketed the films, but they had to come up with something. My final four: Animal House, Strange Brew, When Harry Met Sally, and Holy Grail. Although it has been ages since I saw it, I’ll pick Strange Brew as champ. Good one, eh, two guys guzzling beer!?

Old enough to appreciate classic comedy!

  4. It’s hard to argue with “Animal House.” That would definitely be in my Final Four, along with “Stripes,” “Caddyshack” and the darkhorse pick (isn’t there always a lower-seed team nobody expected in the Final Four?) — “Used Cars,” a fairly obscure movie that came out in the early ’80s and was directed, believe it or not, by Steven Spielberg.
