Frank Deford wrote an excellent article on Johnny Unitas. When I was kid, Johnny Unitas was THE Quarterback. Sure, you had Namath and Jurgensen and Tarkenton, and even Brodie and Lamonica. But Johnny U was in a class of his own. Deford is right, it’s doubtful any QB, present or future, will be “allowed to command the modern game as Unitas did his.”
Deford also mentions the new book out by Tom Callahan, Johnny U: The Life and Times of John Unitas.
I’ve just added this book to my Wish List, in case anyone is interested. (Actually, there are MANY things on my Wish List, if you happen to be one of those who are interested.)
Johnny U - he truly was “one of a kind.”
